How to save a ChatGPT or Claude chat as Markdown
- Copy the conversation from the chat window and paste it here. Lines such as "You said:", "ChatGPT said:", "User:", "Assistant:" or "Claude:" are recognised as speaker changes.
- Or drop the
conversations.jsonfile from a ChatGPT or Claude data export, then choose which conversation to convert. - Pick a style (headings per message, bold labels, or your messages as quotes) and set the names to show.
- Copy the Markdown, or download a .md file for Obsidian, Notion, GitHub, a wiki or your notes.
Why keep chats as Markdown
Useful AI conversations get lost in a long sidebar of chats. Markdown is plain text that every notes app, wiki and code host understands, so saving conversations as .md files makes them searchable, easy to back up and easy to share without screenshots. The formatting the assistant used, such as lists, bold text, tables and code blocks, is already Markdown, so it is kept as it is.
Exports keep the final version of each conversation: for ChatGPT, the branch you were last viewing is followed, so edited and regenerated messages that you abandoned are left out. Images, uploaded files and tool outputs are not included. To get an export, use Settings → Data controls → Export data in ChatGPT, or Settings → Privacy → Export data in Claude; the file arrives by email. The conversion happens entirely in your browser, which matters because chat histories are often personal.
How do I export all my ChatGPT chats?
In ChatGPT open Settings, Data controls, Export data. Unzip the download and drop conversations.json here.
Are code blocks kept?
Yes. Code blocks, lists, tables and links stay in Markdown.
Does it work with Gemini or Copilot?
Yes, for pasted text: put "You:" and "Gemini:" (or similar) before each message if the copy does not include speaker labels.
