Recipe Scaler

Scale ingredient amounts up or down for any number of servings

× 1.5

    How to scale a recipe

    1. Paste or type the ingredient list, one ingredient per line, with the amount first (for example "2 1/4 cups flour").
    2. Enter how many servings the recipe makes and how many you want, or tap ½×, 2× or 3×.
    3. Copy the scaled list. Amounts are shown as kitchen-friendly fractions; untick the option to see decimals.

    How the scaling works

The scaler reads the amount at the start of each line, whether it is written as a whole number, a decimal (1.5), a fraction (3/4), a mixed number (2 1/4), a unicode fraction (½) or a range (2–3), and multiplies it by the ratio of new to original servings. Results are rounded to the nearest common measuring fraction such as ⅓, ½ or ¾, so you will not have to measure 0.5625 of a cup. Metric weights and volumes in grams, millilitres and ounces stay as tidy numbers, and weights in brackets such as "(227 g)" are scaled too. Lines without a number, such as "pinch of salt" or "oil for frying", are left as they are.

Some things do not scale perfectly. Spices, salt and leavening agents such as baking soda can be strong when multiplied a lot; start with a bit less and taste. Eggs may need rounding (or a beaten egg split by weight, about 50 g each). Baking times change with pan size and depth rather than quantity, so check early when you change pans. Your recipe is saved only in this browser so it is there next time.

How do I halve a recipe with 3 eggs?

Beat the eggs and use half by weight (about 75 g), or round to 1 large plus 1 small egg.

Does it convert cups to grams?

No, it keeps your units. Use the cooking converter for cups-to-grams conversions by ingredient.

Can I scale by a factor instead of servings?

Yes. Set "serves" to 1 and "make for" to the factor, such as 2.5.
