How to convert a bank statement PDF to Excel or CSV
- Download your statement as a PDF from online banking. Downloaded statements have a text layer, which this tool needs.
- Choose whether dates on the statement are day-first (UK, EU, India, Australia) or month-first (US), and drop the PDF here. Enter the password first if the PDF is protected.
- Every line that starts with a date and contains an amount becomes a transaction. Descriptions that wrap onto a second line are joined, and the debit, credit and balance columns are matched using the statement's own headings.
- Check the running-balance result: if each balance equals the previous balance plus the amount, the conversion is complete. Rows that do not add up are highlighted.
- Download a CSV that opens in Excel, Google Sheets or Numbers, or a three-column CSV (date, description, amount) for importing into QuickBooks, Xero, FreeAgent or a budgeting app.
Which statements work?
Statements downloaded from most banks and card providers are "text PDFs": the words are stored as text with their positions on the page. The converter groups text into lines, finds dates in common formats (31/01/2026, 01/31/26, 2026-01-31, 31 Jan, Jan 31) and money amounts, and works out the columns from their alignment. Amounts in brackets, with a minus sign or marked DR are read as money out. Withdrawals are exported as negative amounts and deposits as positive ones.
A scanned or photographed statement is only a picture, so it has no text to read. Run it through OCR first to add a text layer, then convert it here; check the numbers carefully, because OCR can misread digits. Unusual layouts, such as statements with several accounts on one page or transactions split over many lines, may need a quick tidy-up in your spreadsheet.
Bank statements contain sensitive information, which is why everything happens in your browser: the PDF is read locally and never uploaded or stored.
Is it safe to convert my bank statement here?
Yes. The PDF is processed in your browser and nothing is sent to a server. You can even disconnect from the internet after the page loads.
Why were no transactions found?
The PDF is probably a scan without a text layer, or the statement uses an unusual layout. Try OCR PDF first, or check that each transaction line has a date and an amount.
How do I open the CSV in Excel?
Double-click it, or use Data → From Text/CSV. The file is UTF-8 with a byte-order mark so symbols and accents display correctly.
Can I import it into QuickBooks or Xero?
Yes. Use the QuickBooks / Xero CSV: Date, Description and a single signed Amount column, the format their bank-statement import expects.
