About the Chicago Manual of Style

The Chicago Manual of Style, 17th edition, is widely used in history, art history, philosophy and publishing. It has two systems: notes and bibliography, with footnotes in the text and a bibliography at the end, and author–date. This tool produces bibliography entries and a short-form note to adapt for footnotes. In-text citations look like a footnote such as "Smith and Khan, How Bees Choose Which Flowers." after the first full note. A typical reference list entry for a web page looks like: Smith, Jane, and Ahmed Khan. “How Bees Choose Which Flowers to Visit.” Science Today, May 14, 2024. https://www.example.org/bees-flowers.

Chicago uses title case, full first names, the first author inverted (Last, First) and the rest in normal order, and dates written as Month Day, Year. Turabian, often used by students, follows the same rules. Always check the result against your institution's style guide, especially for unusual sources. References are generated in your browser and your list is saved on this device only.
