Online Gradebook for Teachers

Free teacher gradebook: weighted categories, letter grades, CSV

Setup: categories, grading and students
Grading method

Type scores straight into the grid. Leave a cell empty if it is not graded yet, or type EX for excused: both are left out of the average. Enter moves down, Tab moves right.

How to use the online gradebook

  1. Open Setup. Choose weighted categories (for example Homework 20%, Quizzes 30%, Tests 50%) or total points, and set your letter grade scale.
  2. Paste your class list, one student per line, or import a CSV exported from your school system or spreadsheet. Create a separate class for each section you teach.
  3. Add assignments with a category and maximum score, then type the scores into the grid. Enter moves down the column, so you can work through a stack of marked papers quickly.
  4. Each student's percentage and letter grade update instantly, with the class average for every assignment at the bottom.
  5. Export a CSV for your school's system, print the whole gradebook, or print one report page per student for conferences and parents.

How weighted grades are calculated

Within each category, the gradebook adds up the points a student earned and divides by the points possible, so a 50-point test counts more than a 10-point quiz in the same category. The category percentages are then combined using your weights. For example, with Homework 40% and Tests 60%, a student on 90% homework and 80% tests gets 0.4 × 90 + 0.6 × 80 = 84%. If a category has no grades yet, the other weights are scaled up so early-term grades are not dragged down by empty categories. With total points, every point counts equally regardless of category.

Empty cells are treated as not graded yet, and EX marks an excused assignment; neither affects the average. If you want a missing assignment to count as zero, type 0. Scores above the maximum count as extra credit. Common scales are A 90, B 80, C 70, D 60; for plus and minus grades type a scale such as A 93, A- 90, B+ 87, B 83, B- 80, C+ 77, C 73, C- 70, D 60, F 0.

Student names and grades are stored only in this browser on this computer; nothing is uploaded, which keeps student data private. Use Backup (JSON) regularly and keep the file somewhere safe, and Restore it to move to another computer.

How do I calculate a weighted grade?

Multiply each category percentage by its weight and add them up: 0.2 × homework + 0.3 × quizzes + 0.5 × tests. The gradebook does this for every student automatically.

Is student data safe?

Yes. Everything stays in your browser and is never sent to a server. Back up the JSON file, because clearing browser data would delete the gradebook.

Can I import from Excel or Google Sheets?

Yes. Save or download as CSV with students in the first column and one column per assignment, then use Import CSV. Export uses the same layout.

Can I have more than one class?

Yes. Use + New class for each section or subject and switch between them with the class menu.
