How to convert steps to kilometres or miles
- Enter your step count from your phone or fitness tracker, or tap a common goal like 10,000.
- Choose your sex, enter your height and pick walking, brisk walking or running.
- For the most accurate result, measure your own stride and enter it in centimetres.
- Read the distance in kilometres and miles, steps per kilometre, time and estimated calories.
How stride length is estimated
Distance is simply steps × stride length. Without a measurement, the calculator uses a widely used rule of thumb: a walking step is about 41.5% of height for men and 41.3% for women. A 175 cm man therefore takes steps of about 72.6 cm, so 10,000 steps is roughly 7.3 km or 4.5 miles, and about 1,380 steps make a kilometre. Brisk walking lengthens the stride, and running steps are about 65% longer again.
To measure your own stride, walk 20 normal steps on a track or along a measured distance, then divide the distance by 20. Calories use a simple estimate of the extra energy walking burns: about 0.5 kcal per kilogram of body weight per kilometre (roughly double that for running). Real values depend on speed, slopes and fitness.
Is 10,000 steps a day necessary? Large studies show health benefits rising steadily up to about 7,000–10,000 steps for adults, with most gains in the first few thousand above a sedentary baseline. The calculator runs in your browser.
