How many steps are in a mile?
For walking, the average adult takes about 2,000 to 2,500 steps per mile. Taller people with longer legs take fewer steps; running steps are much longer, so a mile of running takes roughly 1,400 to 1,700 steps. The calculator estimates your stride from your height (about 41.5% of height for men and 41.3% for women) unless you enter your own stride length, which you can measure by walking 20 steps over a known distance.
For a 5 ft 9 in man, 10,000 steps is about 4.5 miles. Studies following thousands of adults have found lower health risks as daily steps rise towards about 7,000–10,000, so even partial progress counts. The conversion runs entirely in your browser.
