How to convert cups to grams
- Choose the ingredient from the list.
- Enter the number of cups. Fractions like 3/4 or 1 1/2 work.
- Read the weight in grams, and the reference table for spoons and part-cups.
Why there is no single cups-to-grams number
A cup is a unit of volume (236.6 ml in the US), while grams measure weight. How much a cup weighs depends on what is in it: about 120 g of all-purpose flour, 200 g of granulated sugar, 220 g of packed brown sugar, 227 g of butter, 85 g of cocoa powder, 90 g of rolled oats and 340 g of honey. That is why a single conversion figure gives wrong results for most ingredients.
The weights here assume the flour is spooned into the cup and levelled with a knife, which is how most recipe developers measure. Scooping directly from the bag compacts flour and can add 20–30 g per cup. For consistent baking, weigh your ingredients; most professional and European recipes are written in grams. If your recipe uses Australian or metric cups (250 ml), select "metric cup" instead.
