Mean, median and mode of a list of numbers

Step-by-step standard deviation

How to find the average

  1. Paste or type your numbers: test scores, prices, times, anything. Commas, spaces and new lines all work.
  2. The mean, median and standard deviation appear at the top; the table below lists the mode, sum, count, minimum, maximum and range.

Mean, median and mode

"Average" usually means the mean: the sum divided by the count. The mean of 3, 7, 8, 10 and 22 is 50 ÷ 5 = 10. The median is the middle value when the numbers are sorted (here 8); with an even count it is the mean of the two middle values. The mode is the value that appears most often, useful for things like shoe sizes or survey answers.

When data has outliers, the mean and median tell different stories. House prices and salaries are usually reported as medians because a few very large values pull the mean up. In the example above, the single 22 lifts the mean to 10 while the median stays at 8. If the mean and median are close, the data is roughly symmetrical.

For a weighted average, where some values count more than others (like course grades), use the grade calculator instead. Everything is computed in your browser.

FAQ

How do you calculate the average of numbers?

Add them all up and divide by how many numbers there are. For 4, 8 and 9: 21 ÷ 3 = 7.

Is the average the same as the median?

No. The average (mean) uses every value; the median is the middle value. They are equal only for symmetrical data.

Can I paste a column from Excel or Google Sheets?

Yes. Copy the cells and paste them in the box; each line becomes one number.
