How to calculate hours worked
- Enter the start and end time of a shift. If the end time is earlier than the start, the shift is treated as overnight.
- Enter any unpaid break in minutes. The duration is shown in hours and minutes and as decimal hours.
- Optionally type your hourly pay rate to see what the shift earns.
- To total a week, list each day's hours in the second box, one per line, in any format: 7:45, 8h 15m or 7.75.
Hours and minutes vs decimal hours
Payroll systems usually want decimal hours, where minutes are a fraction of an hour: 7 hours 45 minutes is 7.75 hours, not 7.45. To convert, divide the minutes by 60: 15 min = 0.25, 30 min = 0.5, 45 min = 0.75, 20 min ≈ 0.33. Mixing the two formats is one of the most common timesheet mistakes, and it can cost or overpay real money over a year.
When adding durations, the minutes carry over at 60, not 100: 7:45 + 8:15 = 16:00. The second box handles that for you and also accepts negative lines, such as −0:30 to remove a break.
Times are clock times without dates, so a shift can be at most 24 hours. Daylight saving changes during a night shift (gaining or losing an hour) are not detected; adjust the break by 60 minutes on those two nights a year. Your entries are saved only in this browser.
How many hours is 9 am to 5:30 pm?
8 hours 30 minutes, or 8 hours with a 30-minute unpaid lunch break.
How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?
Divide the minutes by 60. For example, 40 minutes ÷ 60 = 0.67 hours.
Does it work for overnight shifts?
Yes. A start of 22:00 and an end of 06:00 gives 8 hours.
