Rules for writing numbers in words

Numbers from 21 to 99 are hyphenated: twenty-one, forty-five, ninety-nine. Groups of three digits are read with a scale word: thousand, million, billion and so on, using the short scale where a billion is 1,000,000,000. American English usually leaves out "and" (one hundred five), while British English includes it after hundred and before a final number under 100 (one thousand and five). Decimals are read digit by digit after "point": 3.14 is three point one four.

On a check (cheque), the amount is written as words for the whole dollars and a fraction for the cents: One thousand two hundred thirty-four and 56/100 dollars. Draw a line after the words to fill the space so nothing can be added. The Indian system groups digits as 12,34,56,789 and reads them as twelve crore thirty-four lakh fifty-six thousand seven hundred eighty-nine: one lakh is 100,000 and one crore is 10,000,000.

Very large numbers up to 36 digits (decillions) are handled exactly with string arithmetic. Everything runs in your browser.
