How to test your microphone

  1. Press Test my microphone and allow access when asked.
  2. Speak normally. The waveform and level bar should move; when they react, a confirmation appears.
  3. The page records five seconds and plays it back so you can hear how you sound to others.
  4. Pick another microphone from the list to compare, or turn off noise suppression to hear the raw signal.

Fixing microphone problems

If nothing moves, check the basics: the microphone is selected in the list, not muted by a hardware switch or keyboard key, and allowed for the browser (address bar microphone icon; on macOS System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone; on Windows Settings → Privacy → Microphone). Bluetooth headsets often have to switch to a lower-quality "headset" mode to use their microphone, which is normal. If the level is very low, raise the input volume in your system sound settings.

Aim for speech peaks around −20 to −10 dBFS: high enough to be clear, below the red zone where distortion starts. Echo and background noise are reduced by the browser when noise suppression is on, as in video calls. Recording and playback happen only in your browser; nothing is uploaded.
