How to crop a photo to a square

  1. Drop your photo on the box above. A square crop box appears, as large as the photo allows.
  2. Drag the square to position your subject, or drag a corner to make it smaller. It stays exactly square.
  3. Click Download. The result is the same number of pixels wide and high.

Where square images are needed

Square (1:1) images are used for profile pictures on almost every platform, Instagram grid posts, product photos on marketplaces like Etsy and eBay, album covers, app icons and avatars in chat apps. Uploading a square yourself means the site does not crop off someone's head or the edge of your product.

For portraits, put the eyes about one third from the top of the square. For products, leave a small even margin around the item. If you need the square at an exact size such as 1080 × 1080 or 500 × 500, crop here first and then use the image resizer.

Cropping uses the full-resolution original, so no quality is lost. The photo is processed in your browser and never uploaded. Need a round avatar instead? Choose the Circle option to get a transparent PNG.

FAQ

How do I make a picture square without cropping?

Use the image resizer with a square size and "Fit inside, add padding" to add borders instead of cutting anything off.

What size will my square be?

As large as the shortest side of your photo allows, unless you make the box smaller. The size is shown below the image.

Can I crop to a square on my phone?

Yes. Drag with your finger to move the square and pinch the corner handles by dragging them.
