How to view EXIF data

  1. Drop a photo on the box above, or tap to pick one from your device.
  2. The summary shows the camera, lens, exposure settings, the date it was taken and, if present, the GPS location with a map link.
  3. Scroll down for every tag the file contains, or click Copy as JSON to paste the data elsewhere.

What is EXIF metadata?

EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) is information that cameras and phones write into each photo. It typically includes the make and model, lens, shutter speed, aperture, ISO, focal length, flash, white balance, orientation and the exact date and time. Many phones also record GPS coordinates, altitude and even the direction the camera was facing.

Photographers use EXIF to learn from their own shots: which settings produced a sharp image, or what focal length they use most. It is also useful for checking when a picture was really taken, or whether an image came from a camera or was edited in software.

Check your photos before sharing

A photo with GPS data reveals where it was taken, which may be your home. Many social networks strip this data, but email, messaging apps, cloud links and file transfers often keep it. If the summary shows a location you do not want to share, use the metadata stripper to remove it.

This viewer reads the file with JavaScript on your device. The photo is not uploaded anywhere; only the optional map link, which you choose to open, sends the coordinates to OpenStreetMap.

Why does my photo show no EXIF data?

Screenshots, images downloaded from social networks and files exported by some editors have no EXIF. WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram remove it when you upload.

Can EXIF data be faked?

Yes. EXIF is ordinary data inside the file and can be edited with common tools, so treat it as a clue rather than proof.

Does this work with iPhone HEIC photos?

HEIC files are not supported yet. Share the photo as JPEG (the "Most Compatible" camera setting) to view its metadata here.

Is the GPS location exact?

It is usually accurate to a few metres outdoors, but can be far off indoors or when the phone had no satellite fix.
