How to invert an image
- Drop the image on the box above. It opens with colors fully inverted.
- Move the Invert slider to blend between the original and the negative.
- Combine with Black & white for a classic monochrome negative, or adjust contrast.
- Click Download.
What inverting does
Inverting replaces every color with its opposite: each red, green and blue value becomes 255 minus the original, so black becomes white, blue becomes yellow and green becomes magenta. The result looks like a photographic negative.
Common uses: turning a scanned film negative into a positive (inverting gives a rough preview, though color negatives also need their orange mask corrected with the warmth and color sliders), making white-on-black versions of diagrams and signatures for dark slides, creating dark-mode versions of screenshots, and artistic effects. It is also a quick way to spot dust and scratches on scans.
Transparent areas stay transparent if you save as PNG. Everything happens in your browser, and the image is never uploaded.
FAQ
Can I turn a film negative into a photo?
Inverting a scan gives a positive. Black and white negatives work well; color negatives need extra warmth and contrast adjustment to remove the orange cast.
How do I invert a black signature to white?
Drop the signature scan here and download as PNG. Black ink becomes white on a black background.
Is inverting reversible?
Yes. Inverting an inverted image gives back the original colors.
