How to make a passport photo at home

  1. Take a photo facing the camera in even daylight against a plain white or light grey wall, with a neutral expression, eyes open and mouth closed. Ask someone else to take it from about 1.5 m away at eye level, rather than taking a selfie.
  2. Drop the photo here and choose your country and document.
  3. Drag and zoom until the top of your head touches the red line and your chin sits inside the green band, centred on the blue line. Straighten if your head is tilted.
  4. Download the single photo for online applications, or a 4 × 6 in print sheet with several copies to print at a photo kiosk or online lab for a few cents. Print at actual size and cut along the grey lines.

Getting the requirements right

Each country specifies the photo size and how large the head must be. The US uses 2 × 2 inches (51 × 51 mm) with the head 25–35 mm from chin to top of hair; the UK, Schengen countries, India and Australia use 35 × 45 mm with slightly different head-size ranges; Canada uses 50 × 70 mm. The guides show the allowed range for the document you select, and the output is rendered at 300 dpi so it prints at exactly the right size.

Typical reasons photos are rejected: shadows on the face or background, glasses (not allowed in US photos since 2016), hair covering the eyes, a tilted head, head too small or too large, low resolution, and edited or beautified images. This tool does not alter your face or remove backgrounds; it only crops, scales, straightens and slightly brightens. Requirements change, so always check the official government website. Your photo is processed entirely in your browser and is never uploaded.

Can I print passport photos at home?

Yes, on glossy or matte photo paper at actual size, though a photo lab print is cheaper and often better quality.

Can I smile in a passport photo?

Most countries require a neutral expression with the mouth closed. A slight natural look is accepted in some.

Is this photo accepted for online renewals?

The digital file meets common size rules, but the authority decides. Check the upload requirements for your country.
