How to preview your YouTube thumbnail

1. Drop your thumbnail image into the box. It stays on your device.
2. Type your video title, channel name, views, upload age and duration as they will appear.
3. Switch between the Home feed, Search results, the Up next sidebar and Mobile, in light or dark theme, to see your video next to others. Your card is outlined in blue.
4. Add thumbnails from competing videos in your niche to see whether yours stands out, and press Shuffle position to see it in different spots.
5. Check the list on the right: size, 16:9 shape, the 2 MB limit and title length.

What makes a thumbnail get clicked

On the home feed a thumbnail is about 360 pixels wide on desktop, and the sidebar version is under 170 pixels, so test at those sizes rather than full screen. Clicks usually come from one clear focal point (often a face with a strong expression), high contrast against the feed's white or near-black background, and three or four words of text at most, big enough to read on a phone. Avoid putting anything important in the bottom-right corner, which is covered by the duration badge, and make sure the thumbnail and title tell one story together instead of repeating each other.

Titles are cut to two lines in most layouts, roughly 60 to 70 characters, so lead with the hook. Compare two or three thumbnail ideas side by side with the shuffle button, then ask a friend which one they would click on.
