How to type with your voice
- Choose your language and press Start dictation. Allow microphone access when your browser asks.
- Speak naturally. Words appear as you talk; grey text is still being recognised and turns into normal text once it is final.
- Say "comma", "full stop" (or "period"), "question mark", "new line" or "new paragraph" to add punctuation in English.
- Press Stop dictation when you are done, then edit, copy or download the text. Your text is kept in your browser if you leave the page.
Tips for accurate dictation
- Use a headset or sit close to the microphone in a quiet room.
- Speak in complete sentences at a steady pace; pausing mid-sentence can split words oddly.
- Dictate first, edit afterwards. Fixing mistakes is faster than stopping to correct each one.
- Names and technical terms may need correcting; you can type into the box at any time.
How it works and privacy
This page uses the Web Speech API built into your browser. In Chrome and Edge, recognition is performed by Google's or Microsoft's speech service, so your audio is sent to that provider to be transcribed, as happens with any browser dictation; Safari on Apple devices may process speech on the device. This website itself never receives, stores or sees your audio or text. If you need fully offline speech recognition, use your operating system's built-in dictation instead.
Why does dictation not work in Firefox?
Firefox does not yet support the speech recognition API. Use Chrome, Edge or Safari.
Is voice typing free?
Yes. There is no time limit or sign-up; it uses your browser's built-in recogniser.
Can I dictate in other languages?
Yes. Pick one of more than 20 languages from the list before starting.
