Remove Accents

Strip diacritics: é becomes e, ñ becomes n

How to remove accents from text

  1. Paste text with accented characters: names, addresses, product titles or a whole document.
  2. Accents and other diacritics are removed, so é becomes e, ç becomes c and å becomes a, while the rest of the text is unchanged.
  3. Copy the plain version.

When plain letters are needed

Some systems still cannot handle accented letters. Old databases, bank transfer references, airline booking systems, email addresses, file names on some servers, usernames and URLs often accept only plain A to Z. Removing accents is also useful when matching names in a spreadsheet, where "José" and "Jose" should count as the same person, or when building search features that should find "cafe" when someone types "café".

The tool uses Unicode decomposition: each accented letter is split into a base letter and its accent marks, and the marks are removed. Letters that are not built from a base plus an accent are converted with a small table, such as ø to o, ł to l, æ to ae and ß to ss. Remember that accents change meaning and pronunciation in many languages, so keep them in anything people will read and use plain letters only where a system requires it.
