VAT rates in Germany
| Rate | Applies to (examples) |
|---|---|
| 19% | Standard rate: most goods and services |
| 7% | most food, books and newspapers, local public transport, cultural events |
In Germany the tax is called Mehrwertsteuer (MwSt, USt). To add 19%, multiply the net price by 1.19: €100.00 becomes €119.00. To remove it, divide the gross price by 1.19: €100.00 including VAT is €84.03 net plus €15.97 VAT. A common mistake is to take 19% off the gross price, which removes too much; the VAT share of a gross price is 19/119, or 15.97%.
German prices for consumers must include VAT (Bruttopreise). Small businesses (Kleinunternehmer) under the turnover limits can choose not to charge VAT at all, and must then say so on their invoices.
Standard and reduced rates checked on 20 October 2026 against the Federal Central Tax Office (BZSt) and the Bundesfinanzministerium. Rates can change with each budget; the rate box is editable if a change takes effect.
