VAT rates in Spain
| Rate | Applies to (examples) |
|---|---|
| 21% | Standard rate: most goods and services |
| 10% | restaurants, hotels, passenger transport and some foods |
| 4% | basic foods such as bread, milk, eggs, fruit and vegetables, books and medicines |
In Spain the tax is called IVA (impuesto sobre el valor añadido). To add 21%, multiply the net price by 1.21: €100.00 becomes €121.00. To remove it, divide the gross price by 1.21: €100.00 including VAT is €82.64 net plus €17.36 VAT. A common mistake is to take 21% off the gross price, which removes too much; the VAT share of a gross price is 21/121, or 17.36%.
The Canary Islands do not use IVA: they have their own IGIC (7% general rate), and Ceuta and Melilla use IPSI. Choose a custom rate for those.
Standard and reduced rates checked on 20 October 2026 against the Agencia Tributaria. Rates can change with each budget; the rate box is editable if a change takes effect.
