Turn words and clues into a printable crossword

How to make a crossword puzzle

  1. Type each answer and its clue on a line, separated by a comma, for example comet, Icy object with a glowing tail.
  2. The words are linked into a crossword automatically, longest first, and numbered with Across and Down clues. The number of letters is shown after each clue.
  3. Press Try another layout for a different arrangement, then print the blank puzzle. Tick Show answers and print again for the answer key.

Writing good crossword clues

Crosswords are great for revising vocabulary, because every answer has to be recalled from a definition and spelled correctly to fit the grid. For classroom puzzles, write clues as short definitions or fill-in-the-blank sentences ("The planet with the biggest rings: ______"), and match the difficulty to the class. Ten to fifteen words make a satisfying puzzle; words with common letters such as E, A, R, S and T connect most easily.

The generator places each word where it crosses existing words the most, and never lets words run side by side, so every letter belongs to a clear Across or Down answer. If a word cannot connect, it is listed so you can swap it or press Try another layout. Spaces and punctuation in answers are removed. Everything is generated in your browser, and your words are saved on this device only.

How many words should a crossword have?

10–15 for a worksheet, up to 25 for a bigger challenge. More words give more crossings.

Why was a word left out?

It shares no usable letters with the placed words. Try another layout, or add a word that links it in.

Can I make a crossword in another language?

Accented letters are removed in answers, so it works best with English words; clues can be in any language.
