How to use the Pomodoro timer

  1. Write down the task you want to work on, then press Start (or the space bar) for a 25-minute focus session.
  2. Work on that one task until the timer rings. If a distraction pops up, note it and return to the task.
  3. Take the 5-minute short break. After four focus sessions, take a longer 15–30 minute break.
  4. Adjust the lengths in Settings, and turn on auto-start or desktop notifications if you like. Today's completed sessions are counted below the timer.

About the Pomodoro Technique

The Pomodoro Technique was developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s, named after the tomato-shaped kitchen timer he used as a student. Working in short, timed sprints with regular breaks makes big tasks less daunting, reduces the urge to check your phone or email, and gives a clear sense of progress. Many people use 25/5 minutes, while others prefer longer blocks such as 50/10 for deep work: the best rhythm is the one you can sustain.

This timer keeps accurate time even if your browser slows down background tabs, because it counts down to a fixed end time rather than counting ticks. The remaining time is shown in the tab title so you can see it while working in another tab. Settings and your daily session count are stored only in this browser.

How long is a Pomodoro?

Traditionally 25 minutes of focus followed by a 5-minute break, with a longer break after four sessions.

Will I hear the timer in another tab?

Yes, as long as this page stays open. You can also enable desktop notifications.

Can I change the durations?

Yes. Open Settings and set focus, short and long break lengths.
