How to use the audio effects
- Drop a song or recording. Anything your browser can play works, including a video's soundtrack.
- Choose an effect: Volume boost with a limiter, Bass boost, 8D audio that circles around your head, or Vocal remover for karaoke.
- Adjust the sliders, press Preview to hear the result and Original to compare.
- Download a lossless WAV or a 192 kbps MP3.
How each effect works
Volume boost applies gain and then a fast limiter (a compressor with a high ratio), so quiet recordings get louder without the harsh clipping you get from simply turning everything up. Bass boost uses a low-shelf filter to lift frequencies below the chosen point (around 60–150 Hz for kick drums and bass lines), with automatic headroom and a limiter to avoid distortion. 8D audio slowly pans the sound in a circle between your ears using a low-frequency oscillator, plus some room reverb for depth; it only works on headphones.
The vocal remover uses phase cancellation: in most studio mixes, lead vocals are recorded in mono and placed exactly in the centre, so subtracting the right channel from the left removes them. Bass and kick drums are often centred too, so the low frequencies of the centre are kept. Results depend on the mix: reverb on the vocal, stereo backing vocals and live recordings leave traces. Everything is rendered offline in your browser at full quality; files are never uploaded.
Does boosting volume reduce quality?
A few dB of boost with the limiter sounds clean. Very high boosts squash the dynamics and can sound flat.
Why doesn't the vocal remover work on my song?
Mono files and songs with wide or reverberant vocals cannot be cleanly separated by phase cancellation.
Do I need headphones for 8D audio?
Yes. On speakers the panning effect is mostly lost.
