How to tune a ukulele

  1. Press Start tuner; Ukulele mode (GCEA) is selected.
  2. Pluck the string closest to your face (G) and let it ring.
  3. Turn the peg until the needle centres and you see ✓ In tune. Then tune C, E and A.
  4. Tap the string buttons to hear each target note.

Standard ukulele tuning

Soprano, concert and tenor ukuleles use G4–C4–E4–A4, often remembered as "My Dog Has Fleas". The G string is usually tuned higher than the C ("re-entrant" tuning), which gives the ukulele its bright, characteristic sound. Some players use a low G (G3) for a fuller bass; switch to Chromatic mode for that. Baritone ukuleles are tuned DGBE like the top four strings of a guitar.

Nylon and fluorocarbon strings stretch a lot when new, so a fresh set may need retuning several times during the first days. Tune in a quiet room, mute the other strings with your hand, and approach each note from below. Audio is processed only in your browser.
