How to tune a violin
- Press Start tuner; Violin mode (GDAE) is selected. Set A4 to 442 if your orchestra tunes higher.
- Tune the A string first, bowing or plucking it gently.
- Use the fine tuners for small adjustments and the pegs only for big changes. Then tune D, G and E.
Violin tuning tips
The violin's open strings are G3 (196 Hz), D4 (293.7 Hz), A4 (440 Hz) and E5 (659.3 Hz), each a perfect fifth apart. Tuning A first is traditional because orchestras tune to the oboe's A. Fine tuners on the tailpiece are ideal for the E string, which is thin and sensitive; pegs need firm, gradual turns pressed into the pegbox so they do not slip.
Bowing gives a steadier signal than plucking, but bow lightly to avoid scratchy overtones that confuse any tuner. After tuning with the tuner, many violinists check the fifths by ear, playing two strings together until the beating disappears. If a peg keeps slipping or the bridge leans, ask a teacher or luthier.
