How to cross out text

How strikethrough text works
Strikethrough is made by adding a combining "long stroke overlay" mark (U+0336) after each character. The mark is drawn on top of the previous letter, so the text appears crossed out in any app that supports combining characters, which today means almost all of them. It works with any letters, including accented ones, numbers and other alphabets.
Crossing out is a popular way to make a joke ("I'm procrastinating researching"), show a price drop, correct yourself in public, or tick items off a list. Because each letter has an extra hidden character, the text counts double towards character limits, and search may not find the words. Some apps have their own strikethrough formatting: in WhatsApp wrap text in tildes, ~like this~, and in Discord and Slack use double tildes.
