How to add page numbers to a PDF

  1. Drop your PDF on the box.
  2. Choose where the numbers go (bottom or top; left, centre or right; or book style, alternating left and right) and the format: "1", "Page 1", "Page 1 of 10" or "1 / 10".
  3. Set the starting number, font size and margin. To skip a cover page, type 2- in Number these pages and keep the start at 1.
  4. Press Add page numbers and download the numbered PDF.

Why number pages?

Page numbers make long documents easy to navigate, discuss and print: "see page 14" only works if there is a page 14. Courts, universities and many employers require numbered pages for submissions, and numbered pages are essential when a printed document gets dropped and shuffled. If you merge several PDFs into one report, numbering afterwards gives the whole document consistent numbering.

Numbers are added as real text in Helvetica, so they print sharply and are searchable. Everything else on the page stays exactly as it was. Book style places numbers on the outside edge, right on odd pages and left on even pages, as in printed books.

The file is processed in your browser, with no upload and no watermark.

How do I start numbering on page 2?

Type 2- in "Number these pages" so the cover is skipped. Keep "Start at number" at 1 if page 2 should show 1, or set it to 2.

Can I use Roman numerals?

Not yet. Arabic numerals are supported in several formats.

Will the numbers overlap my content?

They are placed in the margin area. If your pages have content right to the edge, increase the margin or reduce the font size.
