How to convert MP3 to WAV

  1. Drop an MP3 file on the box.
  2. WAV is selected as the output. Keep the whole track selected, or drag the handles to save only part of it.
  3. Click Download.

Why convert MP3 to WAV?

WAV is uncompressed PCM audio, the format audio editors, DAWs, samplers, some DJ hardware, video editors and CD burning tools handle most reliably. Converting an MP3 into WAV makes it easier to edit without each save adding another round of compression artefacts. It does not restore the quality MP3 compression removed: the WAV sounds exactly like the MP3, just stored without compression.

Expect files about ten times larger: a 4-minute song is around 4 MB as a 128 kbps MP3 and about 40 MB as a 44.1 kHz stereo WAV. The output is 16-bit at the MP3's own sample rate. Tick Mono to halve the size for speech. Decoding happens in your browser with its built-in audio engine, so the file stays on your device.

FAQ

Does converting MP3 to WAV improve quality?

No. It preserves the current quality exactly but cannot restore what MP3 compression removed.

What sample rate is the WAV?

The same as the MP3, usually 44.1 kHz, at 16 bits.

Why is the WAV so large?

WAV is uncompressed: about 10 MB per minute of stereo audio.
