How to convert HEIC to JPG

  1. Drop one or more .heic or .heif photos on the box (for example from an iPhone or iPad, or copied from iCloud Photos).
  2. Choose JPG (smaller, works everywhere) or PNG (lossless), and the JPG quality.
  3. Download each converted photo, or all of them as one ZIP.

What is HEIC?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the default photo format on iPhones and iPads since iOS 11. It stores photos at roughly half the size of JPEG at similar quality, using the HEVC video codec. The catch is compatibility: Windows needs an extension, many websites, upload forms, older Android phones and photo printing services reject HEIC files. Converting to JPG fixes that.

Safari can decode HEIC natively, so on a Mac or iPhone the conversion is instant. In other browsers the page downloads an open-source HEIC decoder (heic2any, built on libheif compiled to WebAssembly) once, and then converts your photos on your own device. Either way, your photos are never uploaded to a server, which matters for private pictures. The output keeps the full resolution and the correct orientation; metadata such as GPS location is not copied into the new file.

Tip: to stop your iPhone creating HEIC files, go to Settings โ†’ Camera โ†’ Formats and choose "Most Compatible". To keep HEIC on the phone but send JPEGs, set Settings โ†’ Photos โ†’ Transfer to Mac or PC to "Automatic".

Does converting HEIC to JPG lose quality?

A little, because JPG is also lossy, but at 90%+ quality the difference is not visible. Choose PNG for a lossless copy (much larger files).

Are Live Photos supported?

The still image is converted. The short video part of a Live Photo is stored separately and is not included.

Why does the first conversion take longer?

Outside Safari, the decoder (about 1 MB) is downloaded the first time. After that, conversions run locally and quickly.
